The Lesire furniture collection, designed by Mabeo Studio, is a handmade family of wooden objects. Made in sustainable Panga Panga wood sourced from a community environmental preservation project in neighboring Mozambique. The collection is based on a simple detail – A repeating pattern derived from a scalloped shape that has been extracted from embroidered textiles commonly found in homes across villages surrounding Mabeo Studio. Translating the soft textile pattern into a hard wooden, hand craft detail, creates a point of contact for Mabeo artisans within its locale, for the otherwise international modernist-based approach. While this extractive point of contact is naive and somewhat superficial, there are many layers that can be considered such as; design context/character, hand craft application/participation, considered used of materials, cultural genuineness and cross – craft influence, among others, that can also be viewed from complexities of historical and anthropological contexts. Lesire collection goes further to show how a collaboration between an artisanal workshop in Botswana and a large US corporation is possible; when people, regardless of positions, location, contexts, and classifications; dedicate themselves to going beyond commercial and structural challenges, to carefully collaborate on making objects with a deep interest in beauty, integrity and interaction, widely available.
